FAQ about laser tattoo removal

What is laser tattoo removal?

Tattoo removal is done by using a laser to break up any pigmented colors embedded in the skin with a high-intensity light beam. The beam passes through the skin and breaks up tattoo pigment particles of into smaller particles. These are then eliminated through the body’s lymphatic system. Over time and treatments, the tattoo will fade and have the appearance as if a tattoo was never there!

How many treatments does it take to remove?

Most treatments take anywhere from 5-10 sessions to remove a tattoo. Those factors though are based on the amount of ink or darkness of ink used in the tattoo, the color, skin type, and or even your immune system and its ability to properly break down the ink. Your physician will discuss your treatment plan as well as pricing in your initial consultation!

Is the Removal process painful?

Though the actual procedure can be painful, pain tolerance differs from patient to patient. Numbing cream is available for purchase and is usually administered an hour and a half prior to procedure. You also can administer numbing cream at home prior to your appointment for pain assistance.

Will the tattoo fade completely?

In most patient cases, the tattoo removal will render complete fade results of your tattoo but that is also determined by the type of ink imbedded into the skin. Some inks that are not FDA approved or regulated may not render the same results which makes 100% removal harder to predict.

Will treatment leave scarring?

Unfortunately, If the tattoo already features scarring, expect that to remain. Our doctors ensure to use the proper laser protocols and give patients important aftercare instructions so that there are no damaging affects to the skin after treatments. As long as the aftercare instructions are followed properly, no scarring should occur.

Are tattoo removal treatments cost effective?

Our treatments vary in price depending on size of the tattoo. We offer many specials and packages that tailor to every patient need!

Are there any side effects from laser tattoo removal treatments?

The most common side effects are:

  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Blistering
  • Scabs
  • Bruising
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Hypopigmentation

If all of the proper protocols are used based on the tattoo and the patient’s skin tone, all of these side effects are temporary. Redness, tenderness, and swelling typically subside within a day or two following treatment. Blisters usually appear within 24 hours of treatment; sometimes the blisters are very large and may look alarming – this is completely normal. Scabs, bruising, and blistering may take up to a week or longer to heal.

Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation occur when the body’s production of melanin is skewed after a laser treatment. With hyperpigmentation, the body overproduces melanin in reaction to the laser treatment, so skin in the treated area is darker than the natural skin tone. With hypopigmentation, the melanin is depleted by the laser treatment and the skin appears bleached. Both hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation are typically temporary and resolve naturally with time. Patients with middle to darker skin tones are at the greatest risk for pigmentation changes and should avoid sun exposure the weeks following each treatment.
